UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

Individuals with Alzheimer’s often struggle with memory loss, impacting their daily life and independence. Currently, there is a lack of specialized digital tools designed to assist with daily memory challenges and provide support for both dementia patients and their caregivers. The need is for a user-friendly, intuitive app that offers memory aids, reminders, and cognitive exercises tailored to the unique needs of those with dementia, thereby enhancing their quality of life and easing the caregiving burden.

We propose the development of a Alzheimer’s Memory Aid App, featuring an intuitive, user-friendly interface tailored for individuals with dementia. This app will offer personalized reminders for daily tasks, engaging memory games, facial recognition for familiar faces, and emergency assistance features. It will also enable caregiver collaboration for effective support and monitoring. Designed with accessibility and simplicity in mind, this app aims to enhance the independence of dementia patients and ease the caregiving process, improving the overall quality of life for both users and their caregivers.

SO, WHO ARE WE DESIGNING FOR?

We are designing for personas like Helen Thompson, a patient navigating the challenges of dementia, and Angel Martin, a caregiver seeking effective tools to support and enhance the quality of life for those under their care. These personas represent our core users: individuals with dementia who need memory support and their caregivers who require a reliable, user-friendly app to assist in daily caregiving tasks.

REFLECTION

How did users respond? Response has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly highlighting the app’s user-friendly interface and the tangible benefits of the reminder system and safety features. Users like Helen Thompson have found a new sense of independence, while caregivers such as Angel Martin appreciate the peace of mind and ease of communication the app provides. What's Next: Moving forward, we plan to integrate more personalized cognitive activities and enhance the caregiver collaboration features based on user feedback. We also aim to expand our educational resources to better support our user community in understanding and managing dementia. What We Learned: Our journey underscored the critical importance of user-centric design and the need for continuous adaptation to meet the evolving needs of individuals with dementia and their caregivers. The feedback loop from our users has been invaluable in identifying areas for improvement and innovation. What We Would Have Done Differently: In hindsight, a more extensive initial testing phase with a wider demographic of users could have provided deeper insights into the diverse needs and preferences within the dementia community. Additionally, implementing more robust personalization options from the outset would have further enhanced the user experience.
